Pimori vs Tamagotchi: a toy you hold, or a pet that talks back
Short version: get a Tamagotchi, like the Tamagotchi Uni or an Original, if you want a real toy on a keychain or your wrist, with the classic care loop and the classic stakes. Choose Pimori if you want that pocket-pet feeling on your phone, with a pet that never dies, remembers your life and visits your friends' pets.
The honest verdict: who each one is for
Tamagotchi is the original pocket pet, and Bandai is still making new ones. Pimori is an independent app that borrows the same idea, an egg that hatches into a small creature that needs you, and takes it somewhere different. Neither replaces the other.
A Tamagotchi is for you if you love physical toys, want something that isn't your phone, enjoy the challenge of keeping a pet alive and raising different characters, or collect shells and editions.
Pimori is for you if you already carry your phone everywhere, want the cozy ritual without the guilt, and like the idea of a pet you can talk to that remembers your people and plans.
Plenty of collectors will want both. If you mainly want to know what Pimori is like as a phone pet, our Tamagotchi-style app guide walks through its care, moods and growth in detail. This page is the head-to-head.
Weighing it up, very seriously.
First, which Tamagotchi?
"Tamagotchi" covers a whole family of products now. These are the main ones people compare with a phone pet, as listed on Bandai's official sites as of October 2026:
Original Tamagotchi
The classic egg-shaped keychain. You feed it, turn the lights off, play, give medicine, clean up after it, check its health and discipline it. It grows from egg to child to adult, and your care decides which of seven adults you get. Runs on a coin battery.
Tamagotchi Uni
A newer device with a rechargeable battery and a wrist band. It connects to Wi-Fi for downloadable items and the Tamaverse, an online world. Link with a friend's Uni to play, craft, trade items and even propose.
Tamagotchi Paradise
A 2025 series that Bandai sells in several colorways alongside its own accessories and collectibles.
Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom
A Bandai Namco game on Apple Arcade, launched in January 2024. You join Mametchi to restore harmony to the kingdom, meet nearly 300 Tamagotchi characters and build a wilderness camp. It's an adventure game more than a care sim.
So "Tamagotchi app vs Pimori" and "Tamagotchi Uni vs Pimori" are slightly different questions. The table below focuses on the Uni, since it's the most phone-like Tamagotchi, with notes on the others.

Tamagotchi Uni vs an app: what you actually trade
If you're weighing a Tamagotchi Uni against a phone app, the device's biggest strength is that it isn't your phone. No notifications from work, no group chat, no doom-scrolling one tap away. It's a toy. You can clip it to a bag or wear it on your wrist with the band, and a full charge takes about 90 minutes and lasts around three days with an hour of play a day, by Bandai's own estimate.
The trade-offs are the ones you'd expect from dedicated hardware:
One more thing to carry and charge. A phone app rides along on something you already have.
Online features need home Wi-Fi. Bandai says Uni can't connect to public Wi-Fi networks, and some Tamaverse features require Wi-Fi.
Check the support period. Bandai's Uni page lists a security support period for its Wi-Fi features until July 13, 2026, and notes that Wi-Fi services may be suspended without notice. Worth checking what's current before you buy.
Collecting is part of the fun. Special editions, bands and lanyards are a hobby in themselves. An app can't give you a shelf of shells.
An app flips most of that. Pimori lives on the phone you already carry, updates itself, and can do things a toy can't, like remembering that your sister's flight lands at six. The cost is that it's on your phone, with everything else on your phone.
The care loop, compared
Both start the same way: an egg that hatches into something small that needs you. From there the loops diverge.
On a Tamagotchi, care is hands-on and has consequences. On the Original you feed it, play, give medicine when it's sick, clean up after it and discipline it, and how well you do decides which of the seven adults it grows into. The Uni widens the cast to 21 adult characters and adds DIY activities, downloadable outfits and an online world to visit.
On Pimori, care is about the same three things every day: snacks, rest and play. Its mood shows you which one it wants. Care earns sparks, which grow its sprout through Seedling, Sprout, Bud, Bloom and Radiant, then decide its bloom form: Starbloom if you mostly explored, Moonpetal if you mostly cared and talked, Sunburst if you mostly played games. Sparks per day are capped, so nobody can rush it.
Starbloom, Moonpetal and Sunburst. How you raise it decides which one you get.
One more thing a Tamagotchi fan will recognize: Pimori's color is rolled once at hatch and kept forever. The odds are the same for everyone (2% Prism, 8% Aurora, the rest split between Lime, Rose, Sky and Honey), and rare colors can't be bought.
What happens when you forget about it
This is the question most people are really asking. On Bandai's devices, a character can die. Bandai's own FAQs for the Original and the Uni explain how to start a new egg after a character dies, and say lost data can't be restored. For many fans that tension is the point: it makes the pet feel alive.
Pimori was designed for people who loved the ritual and hated the guilt. If you go quiet, its needs drift for about a day and a half and then hold. A dust bunny moves in for each day away, up to three. After more than a day it sulks, arms crossed, until you drop by. Your growth is never lost, and the cozy-day count pauses rather than resetting. Going on a trip? Turn on "Pause daily rhythms" and it simply waits.
The worst that happens: a very pointed look.
The big difference: it talks back
A Tamagotchi communicates with icons, beeps and animations, and that's part of its charm. Pimori has an AI brain. You can tell it about your day in your own words and it answers in its own voice, in lowercase.
It remembers your stuff. It suggests what to remember, and you choose what it keeps. You can see, edit and delete any of it.
It helps you follow through. Mention a plan and it offers a reminder, as a card you tap to confirm.
It nudges you toward your people. Birthdays, big days, and a nudge to text the friend you've gone quiet on.
Replies are written by AI models and can be wrong, so double-check anything important. And it's a pet, not a partner: it never flirts. More on that in what an AI pet is.
The kind of thing a keychain can't keep track of.
Friends: linking toys vs sleepovers
Linking pets with friends is a Tamagotchi tradition. With a Uni you can connect devices with a friend to play, craft and trade items, and characters can propose and marry. In the Tamaverse you'll see characters raised by people around the world, though Bandai notes you can't message other users through the device.
Pimori does the phone version, with the people you already text. Friends connect only by invitation. When friends arrive with the public launch, your pet can sleep over at a friend's pet's place and come home with a find, a sticker and a diary card. You can send pet messages and snacks, and take turns on a shared Pocket Treasures board. The free version includes up to three close friends and a weekly sleepover; Pimori Plus adds up to 20 friends and a sleepover every day. Nothing you tell your pet is passed to a friend's.
Off exploring, or off to a friend's. It always comes home with something.
Price: a toy you buy vs an app you grow into
Tamagotchi devices are a one-time purchase. Bandai's US shop lists an MSRP of $19.99 for an Original Tamagotchi and $59.99 for a Tamagotchi Uni, as of October 2026. Retail prices vary, and bands, lanyards and special editions are extra.
Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom comes with an Apple Arcade subscription.
Pimori will be free to play, including hatching, caring for your pet and reminders. An optional Pimori Plus subscription adds more friends and daily sleepovers, voice conversations, deeper memory, extra rooms and early seasonal events. Plus never sells randomness: hatch rarity, finds and gifts stay free for everyone.
Where Tamagotchi shines
It's a real object. Something to hold, clip on or wear, and a break from your phone.
Real stakes. If you like the challenge of keeping a pet alive, nothing beats the original.
A big cast. Lots of characters to raise and collect, plus proposals and marriage between linked Unis.
Collectibility. Shells, editions and accessories, and nearly thirty years of history.
For all ages. The Uni is rated for ages 6 and up, so it works as a gift for kids. Pimori is for adults only.

Questions
Is Pimori a Tamagotchi app?
No. Pimori is an independent virtual pet app inspired by the same kind of care loop. It isn't made by or affiliated with Bandai, and it adds things a classic Tamagotchi doesn't have, like chatting, memory you control and sleepovers with friends' pets.
Is there an official Tamagotchi app?
Bandai Namco's Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom is on Apple Arcade. It's an adventure game where you help Mametchi restore the kingdom, more than a care sim. Bandai's main virtual pets today are devices like Tamagotchi Uni, Tamagotchi Paradise and the Original Tamagotchi.
Tamagotchi Uni or an app: which should I get?
